Somatic Experiencing® is a method of resolving trauma you may have experienced in order to relieve chronic stress and anxiety; the approach that I use as a Somatic Experiencing® Professional (SEP) serves to release traumatic shock.
Both sudden trauma (events such as accidents, sexual abuse, natural disaster, etc.) as well as chronic trauma (events such as long-term emotional or physical abuse) has the potential for seriously impairing your ability to function and to be resilient. The SE® approach teaches that trauma isn't caused by the actual event that you have experienced, but rather develops over time through the failure of your body, nervous system and psyche to process the traumatic events you endured.
What Is Trauma?
During trauma such as described above, whether emotional or physical in nature, we experience either a "fight-or-flight response" or a "freeze response". When threatened, massive amounts of energy are expended in order to ensure our survival. Dr. Peter Levine, the founder of Somatic Experiencing® found in his research that prey animals recovered quite differently from trauma than we do, thus effective "discharging" the energy of the traumatic event and returning to a state of homeostasis.
We however, don't rebound quite as effectively, rather applying (ineffective) coping mechanisms such as rationalizations, judgments about our behaviors, shaming, etc. Instead of getting rid of the the energy related to the trauma, we cause a host of other dysfunctions within the body to occur and thus begin a viscous cycle.
Trauma and Dysfunction
When a child in a dysfunctional family is not nurtured properly, trauma and abuse can be the unfortunate result. Robbed of an opportunity to flourish and grow as a individuated person within the relationship with his or her caregiver (including parents, grandparents, babysitters, scout leaders, clergy, etc.), the child may experience either enmeshment, too close and intrusive or neglect and abandonment, which too far apart.
An enmeshed family environment can be devastating on feelings of self-esteem and future relationships if left untreated and can originate in any of the following areas:
Somatic Experiencing®, through its body-awareness teaching, helps you to achieve a sense of wellness and relaxation in treating your trauma.
